Okay, I know that the least scientific poll you could possibly conduct in the known universe is a blog poll. So there's absolutely no credibility to them at all and yet I have gone and conducted one for two weeks anyway. The scientific method's not the only way to go, you know.
Anyway,
I got the Vizu widget off Typepad and put together the poll you see in the sidebar panel to your right which is: "Which show do you want to win the Emmy for 'Outstanding Drama Series' this year?" I think the results so far are maybe a little surprising...
36% 24
34% House
16% The West Wing
10% Grey's Anatomy
4% The Sopranos
What's really interesting about this is the near shut-out of "The Sopranos." When the air goes out of a pop culture reference, maybe this is what it looks like. There's been a lot of buzz about "Grey's Anatomy" this year, but it could be that people see it more as a guilty pleasure than the outstanding drama, although my daughter would clearly disagree. "The West Wing" ended its run with a strong season, but it's still old news and has been honored plenty by the Academy in the past. In any case, as it stands now, it looks like the real action is between "24" and "House." I've heard a lot of people talking like this has been the best season to date for "24" and it's just possible the show has ripened in Academy voters minds to where it could take the Emmy.
On the other hand, this is rampant, wild, non-verifiable speculation (which is probably why it's so much fun). Even after serving as the TV Academy chairman for two years, I still have no better record than anyone else of predicting these things. So, when I'm sitting in the Shrine on Sunday night, I'll be as surprised as you at whatever happens.
In the meantime, this poll is still open until midnight Saturday if you want to weigh in. Remember this is not asking who you think will win, but which series you think should win.
You'll see the current tally as soon as you vote. Final results Sunday morning. C'mon, live a little...
