Just got back from the Shrine Auditorium... the seats were great, no complaints...
I thought it was a better-than-average show, although unevenly paced. Several of the "high points" fell flat or went on too long. Ellen could have been substantially better used, since she's so quick on her feet, but instead she did a lot of canned "roaming-the-Shrine" bits that weren't as funny as the producers probably had hoped. And, man, if you're going to do a tribute to Johnny Carson and both Jay Leno and David Letterman are in the audience, I would have twisted arms as hard as possible to get the two of them to work together. Although they did that with Tom Brokaw and Dan Rather by way of Peter Jennings and it lacked sizzle.
I've been saying "Lost" was going to win since I got my Emmy ballot last summer. I think I said it on this very blog when I got my Emmy ballot, when the nominations were announced and right after the Creative Arts awards. Anyway, given "Arrested Development" winning last year and "Lost" winning this year, the people who complain the Academy won't give a break to new shows have been proven wrong.
One final thing about the production. I get tired of live shows, particularly award shows, doing such a bad job of estimating their length that they rush through the important parts at the end. Last night, we saw longer bits about "Supporting Actor" categories than the "Outstanding Drama" and "Outstanding Comedy" categories that came at the end. That's a TV crime. Somebody should go to TV jail for that one.
Anyway, had a great time at the Governor's Ball afterward, saw a lot of friends. It's late, and I have to get some shut-eye. Goodnight...
