Okay, I know the Senate has to give its "advice and consent" on this nomination but I'm just dreading all the inflated, overblown coverage that we have to endure that won't change a thing. Does anybody seriously doubt this guy will be confirmed?
The problem for the Democrats is that Roberts is not some whack job. That's the kind of pick they secretly hoped for from Bush in order to really put the brakes on. They were praying for somebody so extreme and marginal that they could claim to have no choice. Bush outfoxed them. He picked somebody who's no villain.
Instead, this John Roberts appears to be bright, thoughtful and even decent. So much so that even the team lined up to block his ascent, like Chuck Schumer, have been reduced to agreeing about his great "judicial temperament." Judge Roberts just happens to be conservative. If the Dems wanted a liberal judge, then they needed to win the 2004 election. They didn't. It's Bush's pick so long as it's within the margins of acceptability, and this one is.
Remember the judge that Roberts will replace -- Sandra Day O'Connor. When she was nominated by another conservative president, Ronald Reagan, she sailed through because the Gipper picked someone who wasn't crazy -- and everybody wanted a woman on the court. I've got the coverage from Time up on Instant History for you to check out if you want.
Please, God, no filibuster talk over this. Let's confirm him and get on with the crass, petty politics we live with these days, but on another topic. This one's already decided.
